Ramadan
Why
In times of fasting, faithfuls of the Islamic religion aim to purify their thoughts and bodies. Generosity is encouraged. Many pay Zakat during the month. Zakat is a donation of around 2.5% of one's wealth to the poor and needy. Each year, this payment may be made at any point, but most choose to do so in the month of Ramadan. Good deeds are considered to be twice as good during this time. Avid study and prayer is also favored, as Ramadan is meant to bring follows closer to God.

"Allah" in Arabic text. |
One purpose of fasting is to shift focus from material and physical needs to the spiritual and divine. It aims to emphasize that life is sustained not only by food and drink but also by the will of Allah. As all followers fast during this time, the behavior spurs a mutual feeling of brotherhood and equality among Muslims. Lies, insults, greed, and false promises nullify all the good that could have come from fasting. Instead, honesty, purity, and modesty should be exercised. It is expected that self discipline, integrity, patience, and optimism are also practiced as one undertakes an extended fast. Engaging in the tradition of fasting is meant to be beneficial as it cultivates piety and develops character. Those who fast during Ramadan are said to have their sins forgiven.
