Ramadan

The History

It is compulsory many Muslims fast specifically during Ramadan. This custom has numerous historical roots. This month is often referred to as "The Month Of Revelation," since is believed that it was during this period the first verses of the Qu'ran were dictated to Muhammad. The prophet was in seclusion, fasting to purify his body and clear his mind, when the angel Gabriel came to him and revealed the Qua'ran, the Islamic holy scripture. This is thought to have occurred on the 27th night of Ramadan.

The Battle of Badr
Years later in, also in the month of Ramadan, as Muhammad cultivated a following, battles broke out between the Muslims of Medina and the idol worshipers of Mecca. In the Battle of Badr, Muhammad and his devotees conquered the Meccans and reclaimed the city. They soon establish the Ka'bah as the holy site of the Islamic faith. The specific dates of these historical events are known only to Muhammad and Allah, that insuring Muslims will increase prayer throughout the month rather than devote a particular day to worship.
